Max (corporately styled as MAX) is the name of a bus rapid transit (BRT) line operated by Utah Transit Authority (UTA) that opened on July 14, 2008. Max has service improvements that differ from regular bus service, such as signal priority, increased spacing between stops, high frequency service and improved stops. UTA is in the process of moving to a BRT system that will include a center running fixed guideway that offers exclusive lane operation. This guideway will be built from 5600 West to 2700 West, allowing Max to operate in a separate corridor from regular traffic.
The 3500 South BRT [3] line connects Magna Township and West Valley City with UTA's Trax light rail system in South Salt Lake, traveling on 3500 and 3300 South. It is the first of several BRT lines that UTA is planning in the Salt Lake Valley and Utah County.[4] Other planned BRT lines include the Mountain View Corridor Project along 5600 West,[5] Wasatch Blvd 3900 South BRT, and several planned BRT lines in Provo, Utah and Orem, Utah.[6]
Costs for the project totaled $7 million; a light rail extension along the same route would have cost $100 million.[4] Each of the 23 stations along the Max route were designed by University of Utah architecture students.[7]
